The Transfer-Print on Clay Process ~ The Majolica Process
mosaic process detail
Majolica elements are used for my mosaics.
I press clay into my majolica sprig molds for the ferns, flowers, etc. needed for the project. Each element is cut and placed to dry.

After a bisque firing in the kiln,
I hand paint the elements with glazes in layers, blending the colors as I would for majolica ware. They are high fired in a kiln to fuse the glazes.

The majolica elements of ferns, frogs, etc. are then arranged and set into a black cement mix which is carefully brushed down from the tops of the ceramic pieces to smooth and level. It is spritzed with water and covered in plastic to cure. setting elements in cement mix
The next day it is painted with black stain.
The elements are carefully cleaned off with cotton swabs and water to wipe off any left over cement mix or black stain. The piece is then spritzed and returned to plastic for 2 more days.
